December diesel demand crawls up to 97% of pre-pandemic level

December diesel sale slithers up to 97% of pre-COVID time

Diesel consumption in India remained sluggish in December, but was down 3% in the same month of 2019, indicating that the economy is slowly coming out of the jungle.

Diesel consumption, which is one of the major barometers of economic activity, fell 7% from the year-ago period in November, after shooting for the first time in eight months from pre-epidemic levels in October, at 6% year on year.

Conversely, demand for petrol during the month maintained an annual growth momentum of at least 8.7%, a decline of less than 9% in November due to holiday driving and positive perception in the car market.

December data received by the public sector retailers, which account for about 90% of the market, also show jet fuel, which covers the ground to remain 43% lower since December 2019 as foreign flights faced fresh trends.
